Committee Description
Year after year, the General Assembly allocates to its Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Affairs Committee, commonly referred to as the "Third Committee", agenda items relating to a range of social, humanitarian affairs and human rights issues that affect peoples all over the world. 1. Convention Against Torture
Adopted and opened for signatures on December 10th, 1984, the Convention against Torture is a UN document written to condemn and ban the torture of any human being, on an international level. It begins by defining torture and goes on to enumerate specifically which acts shall not be tolerated, and decides punishments accordingly. Since its inception, sixty five nations have ratified the Convention against Torture, and another sixteen have signed.

2. Universal Declaration of Human Rights
In December of 1948, the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This document was made in order to protect basic international rights that everyone is entitled to. Areas addressed include: education, freedoms, and equality. It is one of the basic building blocks of the United Nations, and all member nations have signed it.
